UK to Simplify Visa Process for AI Experts in New Initiative

A UK government-commissioned report recommends simplifying and reducing the cost of visas for foreign artificial intelligence (AI) experts to attract more talent to the country.

The “AI Opportunities Action Plan,” prepared by venture capitalist Matt Clifford and expected to be published in November, outlines several strategies to enhance the UK’s appeal to AI professionals.

These include creating special zones for data centers to facilitate easier construction and energy provision. Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has emphasized AI’s potential to boost productivity and has designated data centers as critical infrastructure.

However, the proposal to ease visa processes may face resistance from the Home Office due to existing migration policies. Currently, the Global Talent Visa is a primary route for tech professionals, but it involves notable costs and procedural challenges.

Alongside the action plan, an “AI opportunities unit” will be established to implement the accepted recommendations.
