The U.S. Department of State has announced a record-breaking achievement by issuing 11.5 million visas in Fiscal Year 2024, demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting global tourism and economic growth.
This includes approximately 8.5 million visitor visas, marking a 10% increase over the previous year. This surge in visa issuance is part of the U.S.’s strategy to prepare for major global events, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, both expected to bring millions of visitors to the U.S.
Visa processing times have also improved, with wait times reduced by nearly 60%, allowing first-time visitor visa applicants to receive approvals in less than 60 days on average.
The State Department attributes these improvements to investments in processing capabilities and resources. Additionally, the department has introduced an ambitious plan to increase visa appointments by one million in Fiscal Year 2025, further enhancing accessibility.
The U.S. travel industry has praised these initiatives, noting that they position the country as a more attractive and accessible destination for international tourists. The reduced wait times and additional visa appointments are expected to contribute to economic growth and maintain the U.S.’s competitive edge in the tourism sector.
