Did you know your Tesla can automatically lock its doors when you walk away? It’s seriously one of my favorite features, I use it all the time.
A lot of people have heard about it, but not everyone knows how to turn it on. If that’s you, keep reading.
In this article I will be guiding you on how to activate the feature in your own Tesla car. It is called “Walk-Away Door Lock” and it’s related to the “Drive Away Locking“.
The Walk-Away Door Lock feature automatically locks your Tesla when you exit your car and walk away with an authenticated key like a paired phone key or key fob.
Let’s go straight to how you get activate the feature in your Tesla car. It’s as easy as ABC.
How to Enable Walk-Away Door Lock:
- Open the touchscreen and go to Controls > Locks.
- Turn on the Walk-Away Door Lock option. That’s all. It’s easy right?
So, after you activate the feature, your Tesla will lock itself whenever you step out, and you’ll get a little blink from the exterior lights to let you know it’s done. And if you have folding mirrors, they’ll neatly fold in as another visual confirmation.
Bonus Features for Customization
Want a sound when your Tesla locks?
- Go to ‘Controls’ and then ‘Locks’.
- Turn on ‘Lock Confirmation Sound’.
Now you’ll hear a little chime when the doors lock – super handy, especially if you’re in a noisy place.
Exclude Home from Auto-Locking
If you prefer your Tesla not to auto-lock while parked at home:
- Go to ‘Controls’ and then ‘Locks’.
- Tap ‘Exclude Home’.
Just make sure your home address is saved in your navigation system. You can do that by going to ‘Navigate’ and then ‘Set Home’.
Common Reasons Auto-Locking May Not Work
Auto-locking is designed to be super convenient, but there are a few reasons why it might not work. Here’s what to look out for to avoid any frustration:
- Phone key connection: Make sure your phone’s Bluetooth is on and that you’re within range of the car. Remember that the Walk-Away Lock feature doesn’t work with the key card; you’ll need to manually lock the car if you’re using the card.
- Check for open doors or trunk: Make sure everything is properly closed. Even a slightly ajar door or trunk can prevent the auto-lock from engaging.
- Key inside the car: The car won’t lock if it detects a key inside, so make sure you’ve taken it with you.
Can I lock my Tesla from my phone?
Yes. You can use the Tesla app to lock and unlock your car from pretty much anywhere.
What if my phone’s battery dies?
No worries. You can always use your key card or key fob to lock and unlock the car the old-fashioned way.
