Tesla vehicles are known for their cutting-edge technology and convenient features, and the powered trunk (or liftgate, as it’s sometimes called) is a prime example.
This feature allows you to open and close the trunk with the touch of a button, your key fob, or even your phone.
But what if the trunk opens too high and risks hitting your garage door or a low-hanging object? Thankfully, Tesla has thought of that, and it’s easy to adjust the maximum opening height.
This guide will walk you through the process for all Tesla models
Why Adjust the Trunk Height?
There are several reasons why you might want to adjust the maximum height of your Tesla’s powered trunk:
- Garage Clearance: If you park your Tesla in a garage with a low ceiling, the trunk might hit the door or the ceiling itself if it opens to its full height.
- Low-Hanging Obstacles: You might encounter other low-hanging obstacles in parking lots, driveways, or other locations. Adjusting the trunk height can prevent damage to your car or the object.
- Personal Preference: Some people simply prefer the trunk to open to a lower height for easier access.
How to Adjust the Trunk Height
The process for adjusting the trunk height is very similar across the Model X, Model 3, and Model Y. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Open the Trunk: Start by opening the trunk using one of the usual methods:
- Touchscreen: Tap the trunk icon on the touchscreen.
- Key Fob: Double-click the trunk button on the key fob.
- Exterior Button: Press the button located on the underside of the trunk (or liftgate on the Model X and Y).
- Manually Adjust the Height: Once the trunk is open, manually lower or raise it to your desired opening height. You’ll need to use a bit of force, but don’t worry, you won’t damage anything. Simply move the trunk to the position you want it to stop at.
- Save the New Height: To save the new height:
- Press and Hold: Press and hold the button on the underside of the trunk (the same button you used to open it) for about three seconds.
- Listen for the Chime: You should hear a confirmation chime, indicating that the new height has been saved.
- Test the New Setting: Close the trunk using one of the methods mentioned earlier (touchscreen, key fob, or button). Then, reopen the trunk to confirm that it now opens to the new, adjusted height.
Important Notes and Considerations
- Model X Falcon Wing Doors: While this guide primarily focuses on the rear trunk (liftgate), the Model X’s Falcon Wing doors also have sensors to prevent them from hitting obstacles. However, their maximum height cannot be manually adjusted in the same way.
- Obstruction Detection: Tesla vehicles have sensors that detect obstructions when the trunk is closing. If the trunk senses an obstacle, it will stop moving and chime two times. Remove the obstruction and try closing it again.
- Emergency Override: In emergencies, you can override an open or close command by gently grasping the trunk to stop it in place.
- Software Updates: Tesla frequently updates its software, which can sometimes affect the behavior of certain features. Always refer to the latest owner’s manual for updated instructions.
- Maximum Opening Height: Depending on your vehicle’s configuration, the trunk can open to a significant height. Be cautious in areas with low ceilings.
- Resetting to Factory Settings: To reset the trunk height to factory settings, consult your owner’s manual or contact Tesla service.
Troubleshooting
If you’re having trouble adjusting the trunk height, here are a few tips:
- Ensure you are pressing and holding the correct button: It’s the same button you use to open the trunk from the exterior.
- Hold the button for long enough: You need to press and hold for about three seconds until you hear the chime.
- Restart your Tesla’s touchscreen: Sometimes, a reboot can fix minor software issues. Restart by holding both scroll wheels on the steering wheel until the touchscreen restarts.
Why This Feature Is Important
This small feature shows Tesla’s attention to detail and focus on user convenience. By allowing drivers to easily adjust the trunk height, Tesla helps prevent potential damage and enhances the overall experience of owning a Tesla.
