If you have noticed that your Tesla Model Y or another other Tesla Model is no longer showing the full range it used to, this article is for you. In this article i will tell what you can do to reset the range of your Tesla model Y.
Someone asked me if this works for other Tesla models, the answer is Yes. Whether you are a Cybertruck owners, Model 3, Model S, Model X, etc. this article is for you all.
Don’t forget to come back always to this site as I always publish tips and tricks on how to get the best of your Tesla car.
Now let’s dive into the topic of the day. Over time, Tesla Battery Management System (BMS), which calculates your car’s estimated range give incorrect result due to your charging habits, how you drive or wears and tears in and out of your Tesla car.
The good news is that there is a way you can reset or recalibrate the range of your Tesla car so that it will start giving you accurate estimate again and guess what? It’s very simple to do.
Why Does Tesla Model Y Show an Inaccurate Range?
Tesla range estimator get information from the Battery Management System (BMS) and displays it to you. The BMS is what tracks your battery health, charge and range but some habits throws it off balance thereby causing it to display inaccurate range.
These habits includes frequent short trips, irregular charging patterns, over charging and charging to the same percentage repeatedly.
How to Know When You Need to Reset or Recalibrate Your Tesla Range
If you see common signs like sudden drops in displayed battery percentage, a noticeable difference between expected and displayed range, your car showing “range anxiety” even when you’ve maintained good battery health, you need to reset your Tesla car.
How to Reset or Recalibrate Tesla Model Y’s Range
Recalibrating or reseting your Tesla range is all about letting the BMS to learn about the battery’s full capacity again by taking it through charging and discharging cycle. It sounds simple right?
Now let me tell you how to go about it.
- Discharge the Battery: Drive your Tesla until the battery drops below 10%. Don’t empty the battery entirely because it can damage the cells, so you have the monitor it closely, atleast 6-8% is okay. Don’t over speed during this process, just drive normally.
- Let the Battery Rest: After discharging the to 6-8% park the car let it rest for at least one hour. The process let the battery cells to stabilize which is good for accurate recalibration.
- Charge to 100%: Now plug your car into a good charger. I suggest home charger with 140V and charge it to 100%. Once the car indicates that is 100% charged leave it plugged for extra 30 – 1 hour. This helps the battery to balance it’s self and all cells fully charged.
- Drive Immediately After Charging: Finally, after the battery is fully charged and balanced drive your car normally. This help the BMS recalibrate by experiencing the battery’s full range again, from fully charged to low charge.
You can repeated the process again for about once or twice to get better results, that is if the first process didn’t give you exactly what want.
Tips to Maintain Accurate Range and Battery Health
To keep you Tesla range accurate and your battery healthy here are few things you can do:
- Avoid charging your Tesla to 100%, instead charge between 80-90%. You know why? Charging to 100% always can make your battery wear out faster. Only charge to 100% if you are planning a long road trip.
- Don’t let your battery go below 10% always, this habit can stain your battery with time. Please avoid it.
- Avoid charging your battery always with Superchargers, as it charges fast it also heat up the battery thereby causing wears. If possible use level 2 charges instead unless you really need to charge fast.
- Priorize parking your car in a shaded area, extreme cold or hot temperature is not good for your battery health.
- The last but not the least. Always make sure your care is update with latest firmware. Tesla always update that optimizes battery performance.
Can I damage my battery by resetting the range?
No, resetting your range will not damage your battery as long as you as you followed the instructions carefully. Don’t let it discharge completely while resetting your range and even after the process.
How often should I recalibrate the BMS?
Recalibration is not to be done steady. Only do it highest twice a year and it should be only when you notice any of those signs I mentioned above.
What if recalibration doesn’t work?
If after following the steps above to recalibrate your Tesla and it didn’t work. Please contact Tesla service to run test on your battery to confirm if it is still good condition.
