Tesla is preparing to expand testing of its Full Self-Driving Supervised system in Europe, and a new Swedish city could soon become part of the program. The company has submitted an application to begin local testing in the city of Jönköping, marking another step in Tesla’s effort to bring its advanced driver assistance software into real-world European traffic.
According to local newspaper reports, Tesla has contacted the municipality of Jönköping requesting permission to test its Full Self-Driving Supervised technology on public roads. The company has already received approval to run similar tests in several Swedish municipalities and on parts of the national road network. If the new request is approved, Jönköping would become the latest location where Tesla vehicles operate with supervised autonomous driving technology.
Tesla Confirms Application for FSD Testing
Tesla has confirmed that the application has been submitted, although the company has not revealed many details about the planned tests. Sofia Bennerstål, Tesla’s Head of Public Policy for Northern Europe, confirmed the request while keeping specifics limited.
She said, “I can confirm that we have submitted an application, but I cannot say much more about it.”
Bennerstål also indicated that Tesla is encouraged by the progress of its existing tests in Sweden.
She added, “We are satisfied with the tests so far.”
The company’s positive assessment suggests Tesla sees Sweden as an important environment for developing and validating its Full Self-Driving technology.
Testing Will Include Safety Drivers
If the application is approved, Tesla will use a limited number of company-owned vehicles for the tests. These vehicles will not operate independently without supervision. Trained Tesla safety drivers will remain behind the wheel at all times and will be ready to take control if necessary.
This supervised approach allows Tesla to collect driving data while ensuring safety on public roads. It also helps regulators evaluate how the technology behaves in real traffic conditions.
The goal of these tests is to refine Tesla’s driving software while building trust with regulators and local authorities.
Sweden Becoming a Key Testing Ground
Tesla has already begun Full Self-Driving testing in other parts of Sweden. One of the first municipalities to approve testing was Nacka, where Tesla vehicles have been operating with supervised autonomous features.
During earlier approvals, Tesla emphasized the importance of cooperation between government agencies and technology companies.
The company previously stated that collaboration between authorities, municipalities, and industry helps support technological development and allows future transportation systems to be safely integrated into everyday traffic.
