Tesla recently announced an updated Model Y, and even though it won’t be available for a few months, here’s a breakdown of the changes:
Steering and Signals:
- The new Model Y has a traditional turn signal lever (stalk) on the left side of the steering wheel. This is different from the newer Model 3 and Cybertruck, which use buttons on the steering wheel for signals. Many people prefer the traditional lever, so Tesla brought it back.
- The steering wheel is similar to the new Model 3 but with fewer buttons because of the signal stalk. It has buttons for wipers, high beams, voice commands, and camera views.
- There’s no lever on the right side. Functions like Autopilot and shifting gears are controlled with the right scroll wheel on the steering wheel and the touchscreen.
Rear Seats and Trunk:
- The back seats can now recline electronically and fold completely flat with the touch of a button (either in the trunk or on the front screen). This makes it easier to load large items.
- The back seat cushions are also slightly longer for more comfort.
- The trunk (liftgate) is now made of separate pieces, which should make repairs cheaper if it gets damaged.
- The rear window is now more rectangular than before.
- The trunk can now open automatically when you stand near it with your phone (if your phone supports this feature).
Front Trunk (Frunk):
- The front trunk (frunk) doesn’t open automatically, but it now has a drain plug. This means you can use it as a cooler for drinks by adding ice.
Other Interior Changes:
- The speakers in the doors have been moved and have a nicer metal cover.
- There’s more double stitching on the interior, especially on the dashboard, which makes it look more luxurious.
- The ambient lighting is slightly different, now only going halfway down the door.
Towing:
- It’s unclear if the new Model Y will have a tow hitch right away. It’s not listed as an option currently, but there might be a way to add it later.
Wheels:
- The new Model Y comes with new 20-inch “Helix 2.0” wheels. They don’t have covers (aero covers) like the previous wheels, likely because they are already efficient. Other wheel options might be available later.
In short, the updated Model Y has several improvements, including a more traditional steering wheel setup, more practical rear seats and trunk, and some nicer interior touches.
